At Carmel, everything revolves around ‘Excellence, Community, Tradition’.

From Kindergarten upwards, academic excellence is paramount. At the same time, we place value on the development of the whole child, discovering each child’s unique talents and interests. The hallmark of Carmel is its maximize each student’s success in his or her area of excellence. This focus, in turn, builds self-esteem and enhances achievements across the full spectrum of education.

Family involvement is key and begins from the moment you visit our campuses. We believe the parent-school partnership underpins a child’s ability to blossom and develop to his or her full potential. Carmel functions as one large family, providing support, care, help and direction.

At Carmel’s Elementary, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) has played a key role in allowing the children to access, critically analyse and manipulate information, always with the aim of acting upon learning and being leaders of change, helping them to become independent learners and working to instill within enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge.

We are an English medium school offering immersion in Mandarin and Hebrew from Pre-school up with French an option for our francophone children.

At Carmel Elementary, we think about and reflect on our learning, challenge ourselves and take ownership for our learning, and try to act on and show the qualities of the PYP Learner Profile, by aiming to be: Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Caring, Open-minded, Well-balanced and Reflective.

We encourage our students to learn through curiosity, to ask questions and to explore ways of finding answers to these questions. This inquiry-based approach involves our teachers carefully guiding our students in:
  • exploring, wondering and questioning
  • experimenting and playing with possibilities
  • making connections between previous learning and current learning
  • making predictions and acting purposefully to see what happens
  • collecting data and reporting findings
  • clarifying existing ideas and reappraising perceptions of events
  • researching and seeking information
  • taking and defending a position

English As A Second Language (ESL) is an enrichment programme for students whose native language is not English. Through ESL sessions, students receive instruction in the English language through one-to-one and small-group sessions. Within a number of weeks, students generally start to grasp English and within 1-2 years, most students are fluent. Carmel Elementary welcomes students from all over the world, including those who have not studied English before. ESL classes are designed to augment and enhance the curriculum. The Learning Enhancement services provide academic or social skills support in a 1:1 or 2:1 setting. These services occur in 40 minute sessions, between 1-3 times per week. The learning support teacher and classroom teachers will liaise in order to determine the frequency of sessions necessary for each student. Students who have received a diagnosis from an educational psychologist or medical doctor, as specified on an educational evaluation, will be the first students considered for LE services. These students shall be provided with an Individualised Educational Plan (IEP). This plan will outline any academic or social-emotional goals as well as the accommodations and modifications necessary to achieve these goals. The learning support teacher may also pull out of, or push into the classrooms in order to support small groups of children in each grade. The goal of this support is to help facilitate classroom activities. ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS Carmel Elementary School also works with a network of external providers for speech and language, occupational therapy, social and emotional services and educational assessment.

Tuition fee subsidy is available to families with financial difficulties. Applications for financial aid can be sent on request. These will be reviewed in confidence by the Bursary Committee of the Carmel School Board in an impartial, professional and sensitive manner.
